fall break | maine scenic photographer

Fall is typically my busy time of year.  If I’m not behind my camera, I’m in front of my computer — culling, editing and posting the images previously shot.  This year provided some breathing room and so it was a great time to take a little time off.

Where to go in Maine in the fall?  I would run out of fingers and toes tenfold counting all the beautiful spots in this great state.  So we settled on Point Lookout in Northport — not too far that it would take more than a half day to leisurely make our way there, and not too close so that it felt like we were going away on vacation.  My honey and I, and my sister and her honey bunked in a sweet, rustic log cabin nestled in the woods and warmed by the fire in the cast iron stove.  We took the short trip up Mount Battie that overlooked the lovely little coastal town of Camden, and then went into town for dining and some therapy shopping(!).    Belfast wasn’t too far up the road and it turned out to be a delight, and Lincolnville was well worthwhile for getting up and out before the break of dawn.

We had such a great time that we’re thinking we’ll do it again next year!  I’m happy to share snippets of our mini vacation with you!

cape elizabeth lifestyle photographer | the happiest witch of the east

Part II of this two part series 🙂 has no flying monkeys, no falling houses, no threats against little dogs and no hourglasses counting the minutes to doom.   And much to my chagrin, no ruby slippers either.

However, in honor of Halloween — the spookiest and chilling holiday — we have the happiest witch of the east, and her name is Kristi!  (If you missed part I, click here for a brief lesson in Wicca — the practice my friend loves and lives.)

kristi_0029

I’ve been wanting to do this session with her for quite some time and when the moon and the stars finally aligned (well, actually, when our mutual schedules offered some free time….), we decided that we couldn’t wait any longer!  A little background here …. a few weeks before, while covering the Laudholm Craft Fair for Maine Magazine, I came across the nicest ladies who were hand crafting — wait for it —- BROOMS!!!!  Sweet, beautiful, hand crafted brooms, made by Haydenville Broomworks,  and there was one that was just perfect for our witchy session!!!!  (Housework?  Don’t be silly…..)

kristi_0040

Fast forward to early October, and we are at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.  Having just finished observing and photographing Kristi’s Wicca practices, it was time to have a little fun!  The sun was setting and the full moon was a-rising!  Magic?  Perhaps.  I say bring it!

We should educate people that “Witch” is not evil but ancient and positive.  The first time I called myself a “Witch” was the most magical moment of my life.

kettle cove, maine lifestyle photographer | part I — a brief lesson in Wicca

This fabulously gorgeous woman has been one of my closest friends for what has been almost forever!  For more than thirty years, she’s been a pal, a compadre, a confidante, a co-worker, a co-conspirator, a buddy, an ally, an inspiration, a source of fun and laughter, and a shoulder on which to cry.  We’ve hit the town together in Portland, Boston, Nantucket, New Orleans, Quebec, and lots of places in between.  We’ve shared heartbreaks and heartaches, dreams and aspirations, roll-on-the-floor laughter and, like all great friendships, a few things that will never be shared beyond the two of us!   Oh, the stories we could tell ….  😉

kristi_0001

But something I didn’t know anything about in Kristi’s world was her practice of Wicca, and here’s what I’ve learned.  Around the age of 30 and searching for something more, Kristi read a book called The Mists of Avalon (by Marion Zimmer Bradley) which led her to explore and embrace the world of Wicca — the old world of an ancient belief system and the pagan ways.  The practice holds firm that the divine is present in nature and honors the environment — from animals and plants to trees and rocks — and should all be revered as elements of the sacred.

kristi_0013

Oh, and wine.  Yes, definitely wine.   A few weeks ago, we decided to do a lifestyle session that shows her practices and her beliefs, and how she honors that of which she has come to honor, love and live.  We found our perfect spot at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on a beautiful fall evening, and she set out to place her bounty of goodies and goodness — all in a strategic and meaningful way.

kristi_0002

kristi_0003

What I mostly learned is that this practice that is Kristi’s world is very spiritual, inclusive, honest and accepting.  It honors all beings, promotes karma, accepts consequences, and encourages a responsible life.  In essence, harm no one and no thing, and you will be rewarded with a full, happy life and afterlife.

I’m honored that Kristi invited me into this part of her world, of which I know very little, to share with my readers.  She’s the real deal, she’s beautiful inside and out, and she has found something that not many people understand, but that feeds her soul and works for her — and that’s really all that matters!

Tomorrow:  Part II of this blog depicts Kristi celebrating her pagan beliefs in a whole different — and fun– way.  Preview below …. you won’t want to miss it!

wolfe’s neck farm, freeport, maine maternity photographer | beautiful baby belly

maternity at sunset

Last summer I was so honored to photograph the wedding of Leigh and John.  The celebration took place at Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport — in the barn, and it was lovely!  Fast forward several months and I get a message that they were expecting a baby!  Woohoo!  They enrolled in my Moms & Miracles program — 5 sessions for one price — that documents the baby’s first year from womb to one (sounds so Elmer Fudd-ish!).  It’s a special program that shows the growth and all the mind-boggling changes of a little one in that first very fleeting year.

Anyhow, I adore these two so imagine my excitement at photographing them again, along with their growing family! I’m happy to report that this baby has already been born and photographed too!  More of those images later.  First, here is Leigh and John on their wedding day.

Well, that wedding was  so much fun that we thought the Farm would be a great place for their maternity photos as well.  It was a lovely spring evening in June with a sunset that didn’t disappoint!  Leigh’s baby bump was the star, and we had a great time!

Maggie Bokor Jewelry — feel more you

Maggie Bokor is a real gem.  She’s one of those lovely people who speaks from her heart, who is in touch with her soul and is in tune with all that surrounds her.  She is talented beyond belief as an artist, jewelry designer and creator, writer, marketer, Nia dance instructor, Reiki practitioner, musician, singer, songwriter … oh, the list, I’m sure, could go on and on.  I’ve known her for years — we’ve collaborated on projects several times, and she’s my good friend.

Inspired by nature, Maggie’s jewelry is organic, timeless and elegant.  She pours her heart and soul into each piece she creates, and it shows in the beautiful sterling silver earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings she produces.   I love that she ties each of her lines to a natural element, and that each line is meant to awaken a feeling of self empowerment, strength, and serenity.  One of my favorites, her Echo collection, arouse feelings of connection.  But instead of me telling you all about this and her other lovely collections, visit her website and see for yourself.  (Maggie and I have had a few model sessions and you’ll see much of my work on her website.  More on that in another blog post.)

Maggie’s beautiful work is available across the country in many exclusive galleries and shops, including Abacus here in Portland and Archipelago in Rockland.  She makes it easy, too, by offering on-line shopping.

My own line … whaaaaat??????  Get this ….   Maggie is in the process of designing a line of jewelry specifically for me to offer my brides.  Imagine that!  I’m so darn excited!

So a couple of weeks back I spent a few hours with Maggie at SoPo Art Studios in South Portland where she works her magic.   It was a joy to capture her as she worked the details — sketching a design, crafting the clay, smoothing the rough edges, adding gemstones, soldering, polishing and packaging.

Be sure to visit her website and reach out.  Like I said, Maggie is a real gem and her jewelry is special and unique. As is she.
