documenting daily life | new england and new orleans photographer

It was all so very innocent.  My New Year’s Day Facebook post said something about 365 new days, 365 new opportunities.  I mean, that’s what a new year is all about, right?  I wasn’t meaning anything more, and that’s when it all started ….

Here’s a little background.  My friend (and a fabulous photographer) Kristina did a killer 365 project last year.   If you aren’t familiar with that term, it translates to mean 365 images over the course of the year, taken daily.    It’s a daunting task if you ask me.  Several of my photographer friends were planning on participating and were in the process of creating a special FB page for sharing images, challenges and successes.  Me?  I was on the fence.

As an aside, you may recall that last year I participated in a project 52 … yup … one photo per week.  If you missed it, click here to see my year in pictures, week by week.  I didn’t realize how special this project was until I was already done.  I put all the images together into one file (wish I had thought of that at the beginning of the project!) and was pretty darn thrilled to see the entire year — all 52 images — pulled together and in one place.  I even felt a little proud!

Back to that Facebook post about new days and new opportunities … another photographer friend Judy piped up with one simple question … “Does this mean you’re doing the 365?”  Gulp.  I threw caution to the wind….  I’m in!

To keep me honest, I’ll share my images monthly.  Granted, we’re already well into February, but you know what they say about personal work?  It takes a way-back seat.  Plus, in order for this to work for me, it has to be on my terms without added pressure … a photo a day is pressure enough!  Speaking of that, daylight is winding down, and since I haven’t made my image yet today, I better get going.   🙂

Here is January through my lens.

Personal Photo Project | maine and new orleans photographer

For those of you who know me, know that when I pick up my camera, I’m a very happy person.  I love my job, which isn’t a job at all because I have tons ‘o fun and meet some truly wonderful people.  I’m grateful for finding photography and for photography to have found me.   I’ve made this a business, and it’s a happy little business indeed!

But when I pick up my camera with no agenda, expectations and demands — when it’s just me, myself and my camera –my heart sings.   Lllllaaaaaaaaaa …. Can you hear it???!!!  THIS!  This is what fills my soul, feeds my creativity, allows me to observe, to look at seemingly meaningless things in a whole different way, and capture those moments — just for me.   It’s crazy good and I love it!

I just don’t do it enough.

2017: Project 52

So last year I participated in a Project 52 … that is, making and posting one personal photo per week …. which got me shooting more than I might have otherwise.  It was overall very fun, challenging,  fulfilling, and oh so pleasing to see the final 52 — my year — in its final form.  It’s worth noting that I do have one exception — week 48.  Well, that week was incredibly sad because we said goodbye to a man I have loved dearly for almost my whole life and my focus was not on making photographs, but rather on making a slideshow of his life to share with family and friends.  However, you will see his handsome and smiling face still added to Week 48 — a photograph I took when he was inducted into the Chevrus Hall of Fame a few years back.  It just feels right.

Before I share with you my Final 52, let me tell you what I’m doing for 2018….. any guesses?  Yup … a 365!!!  Stay tuned as I’ll share some of those throughout the year.

Without further ado …..  My 2017 week by week…

maine lifestyle photographer

When I get a call from a friend who I absolutely adore, and she asks me to photograph her sweet little two year old, my heart just melts.  This age seems so magical to me …. the wide eyes, the flailing legs, the almost smile (okay, maybe gas … ), the cute outfits, and the nursery that is almost always dressed just perfectly.  Be still, oh heart!!!

I’ve known Lianna when she worked for Center for Grieving Children, when I did a lot of volunteer photography for the organization.  We became fast friends, and now she is a Mom — a wonderful, attentive, nurturing, loving mom.  And although I don’t know Nick very well, it’s clear he has this diaper and Dad thing down pat!

This is a wonderful age for a lifestyle session … you know, capturing those seemingly ordinary moments that when frozen in time, are really quite extraordinary.  Here is Lianna, Nick and little lady Jocelyn …

fall break | maine scenic photographer

Fall is typically my busy time of year.  If I’m not behind my camera, I’m in front of my computer — culling, editing and posting the images previously shot.  This year provided some breathing room and so it was a great time to take a little time off.

Where to go in Maine in the fall?  I would run out of fingers and toes tenfold counting all the beautiful spots in this great state.  So we settled on Point Lookout in Northport — not too far that it would take more than a half day to leisurely make our way there, and not too close so that it felt like we were going away on vacation.  My honey and I, and my sister and her honey bunked in a sweet, rustic log cabin nestled in the woods and warmed by the fire in the cast iron stove.  We took the short trip up Mount Battie that overlooked the lovely little coastal town of Camden, and then went into town for dining and some therapy shopping(!).    Belfast wasn’t too far up the road and it turned out to be a delight, and Lincolnville was well worthwhile for getting up and out before the break of dawn.

We had such a great time that we’re thinking we’ll do it again next year!  I’m happy to share snippets of our mini vacation with you!

signature chefs event

March of Dimes Signature Chefs Event | portland maine family photographer

For the second year in a row, I’ve had the pleasure of participating in some pre-work for the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Event, taking place this Thursday (September 28) at DiMillos in this wonderful foodie city of Portland, Maine.

In a nutshell, this is a food station frenzy meets silent auction event!  First, more than a dozen chefs from some of Portland’s best restaurants will offer their own culinary creation — it was so delicious last year, and will be equally as delectable this year!  Who’s participating?  Think Union, Sur Lie, Baharat, Honey Paw, Ice It! Bakery, Mami, Union Kitchen, RiRas and so many more!!  Secondly, there is an online auction (click here to see what’s on the block and to bid NOW!) as well as a silent auction taking place at the event on Thursday night.   Yours truly is donating a family lifestyle session that includes a beautiful album — great for a family night of board games and popcorn, an afternoon of baking and crafts, or your annual tree-cutting outing ending with a delicious cup of hot chocolate!  These sessions are fun for all!

My assignment, and I loved every minute of it, was to make images of the participating chefs, the families, and the children — the sweet little March of Dimes miracles — to help promote the event.  I had a ball!

For more information on this yummy night out, click here.  Buy your ticket.  Support the March of Dimes.  And then eat, eat, and eat some more!  In the meantime, meet some of the talented chefs, the grateful families and the beautiful little children who have directly benefited from the efforts of this organization.

family expansion | maine family photographer

Last week you saw photos of my maternity session with Val.  Well, it was really HER maternity session with me.  Let’s just make that one clear….  🙂  If you missed that  post, then click }here{   It’s really sweet!

Val is the sweet wife of my awesome, handsome, smart, funny, kind and loving nephew Joe.  They were married seven years ago (last week to be exact…) and are now expecting their second child — a girl! — and her name is Riley.  How cute is that?  Riley’s big brother, Cam, was on hand for the maternity session that was also a sweet family session with some heart-stopping father and son moments.  We’re at Kettle Cove, on the beach, with a sunset.  *sigh*

So feast your eyes on this wonderful family who I love with all my heart!  They will soon be four, and we can’t wait!!

salon lifestyle photography — Slidell, Louisiana

I can photograph people doing their thing all. day. long.  Let me be a fly on the wall, scurry around and capture people doing what they do — working, playing, creating, or whatever that wonderful thing might be.  I recently spent some time with Brittany and Rachel, owners of Serendipity Salon in Slidell, Louisiana, who wanted professional images to use for their social media.  I was happy to oblige.

Here’s what I love about their salon …. the ladies are lovely!, it’s visually pleasing, they provide hand massages while getting your hair washed, or a head and shoulder massage during the consultation, they use UNITE … love those products!, Plus, they practice that sweet southern charm by offering their guests champagne, coffee, coke or water … a full service provider of pampering!  See these gorgeous ladies in action ….

Friday Favorites | Maine Lifestyle Photographer | Higgins Beach

Beach Yoga Lifestyle Session

If you know this lovely woman, then I’m sure your world is just a little bit brighter than it might be otherwise.  Lianna is a gem!  She’s caring and generous, focused and ambitious, and a whole lotta fun!  I met her when doing some volunteer photography for the Center for Grieving Children in Portland — a terrific organization.  When she started doing yoga, I wanted to photograph her doing what she had grown to love — at sunrise.

Here are Lianna’s favorite images from this beach lifestyle session, and her own words.

Jane captured so much in this photo and may not even have realized it! Wheel pose is so uplifting, not only does it open your heart, but it helps to create a sense of emotional stability. The sun rising at just the right moment foreshadows the burst of energy that you feel throughout your body when you reach the peak of the posture.

Higgins Beach is such a special place to me. Filled with childhood memories and fun times with family during the summers. It especially reminds me of my late grandfather, who loved this beach more than anyone. During this photo, I remember looking up and thinking of Thomas Donahue with a smile. Such a special moment for me, and Jane captured that.

sending love

sending love

This sums up how I feel about my husband in a nutshell. I could scream it from the mountain tops everyday—but icing on the cake was a quick vertical jump that Jane caught brilliantly, while being surrounded by the sand, sun and ocean.

My turn

Ha!  Two of Lianna’s favorites are two of my favorites!  Here are my choices, less the ones she already chose….

This moment of content sums up this early sunrise yoga session so nicely in one image.  Solitude — we were alone on the beach.  Beginnings — the sun was just coming up.  Calmness — this quiet second of contemplation.  And for me, the capture — camera at the ready;  time stopped.

sunburst, sunflower

sunburst, sunflower

I really like this image!  I like the strength represented in her shoulders, and her hand leading to the enormous ocean and world — full of possibilities and there for the taking.

within reach

I am in awe of what this image represents.  First, the promise of a new day is pretty fantastic, is it not?  And I don’t take nearly enough time to reflect, to ponder, to just be.  This is a reminder to do just that.  And when you practice this self caring on a beach?  That’s pretty darn cool!

Lifestyle sessions can take many forms, and this is just one.  It’s those seemingly ordinary moments that make up this thing we call life.  They aren’t so ordinary after all.

portland, maine family lifestyle photographer | ferry to peaks island on a summer afternoon

The leaves are falling from the trees and there’s a chill is in the air.  That makes this a perfect time to take a walk down memory lane, to a time when the air was warmer and the closet was full of open-toed sandals.  *sigh*

But first, I first met these folks several years ago when I was photographing their home to sell.  They were warm and engaging, and I knew almost immediately that I’d love to hang out with them, get to know them a little better, and photograph this beautiful family.

So we planned a short trip, stayed local, and had great fun while I was able to capture this sweet family’s love, laughter, and spirited personalities!

The afternoon was warm and cheery — perfect for a ferry ride out to Peaks Island.  We boarded the ferry (Casco Bay Ferry Lines) and began our mini adventure!
